Geography

This course is designed to encourage independent thinking and help you develop an understanding of both local and global issues. By choosing geography you will develop your understanding of human and physical features of places. Secondly, you will build an awareness of how people are linked to their surrounding areas and beyond.

What the course involves

You will study issues such as climate change, food and water security, natural hazards, sustainable development, coastal and river management and conservation strategies in global biomes.

You will develop skills which include understanding climate change, poverty, deprivation, global shifts in economic power and the challenge of sustainable resource use, as well as many more relevant world issues.

Assessment

You will sit three exams which will test your understanding of the following areas: 

  1. Living with the Physical Environment — 1hr 30mins — 88 marks — 35% of the course
  2. Challenges of the Urban Environment — 1hr 30mins — 88 marks — 35% of the course
  3. Geographical Applications — 1hr 30mins — 76 marks — 30% of the course

There will be two opportunities to conduct fieldwork in two different locations including Birmingham and  Hunstanton. You will visit a natural environment and investigate the physical processes operating in that area. In addition, you will study the human aspect of geography and visit a dynamic urban area and study the impacts people have on that location.

GCSE 9–1 Geography AQA Revision Guide: 1st edition (GCSE Geography AQA 2016) or CGP GCSE Geog-raphy  revision guide AQA.

Geographers have a wide range of skills, including independent research and thinking skills, interpreting a range of data from different sources such as photographs, maps and graphs, making comparisons and developing  solutions to issues faced by different places.
