History

There has never been a better time to study History at Herewoode academy. There is now a huge range of exciting topics that can be studied as part of History.

What the course involves

If you choose to study History at The Herewoode Academy, you will study The USA 1910–1929. Linking with our 20th Century units in Year 9, this is a very topical subject including gangsters and prohibition.

You will also then study  Germany 1919–1991, which covers the Weimar Republic, the rise of the Nazis and the splitting of Germany into East and West.

You will then complete the thematic study of Sport, Entertainment and Tourism from the year 1000 to the modern period. This involves the study of sport and holidays through time.

Finally, you will move on to studying Elizabethan England. This unit involves the study of Queen Elizabeth I, the plots against her and the Spanish Armada.

Assessment

Students are assessed in two exams which take place at the end of Year 11.  Students will be taught the key historical skills throughout the course and will work extensively with sources and interpretations.  Skills learned in History are highly transferrable and the course offers an ideal foundation for those wishing to pursue careers in law, journalism, social work, medicine, politics or the civil service.  

History is a challenging, highly literary subject in which students are expected to read and write extensively.  Learning will also be supported through discussion, decision making exercises and the use of historical sources. History is suitable for all motivated students with enquiring, open minds who are prepared to work hard.
